>>> List For Week of October 26, 2008 Gene Shay WXPN Philadelphia // Annotated And Verbose Edition Last night's show was produced while the Phillies were playing the Rays in the 4th game of the World Series. This whole town has gone baseball crazy and we had the game on the TV in the studio with closed captions. Yes it was a distraction but what a thrill to see our guys win---and come just one game away from a much deserved World Championship. Go Phillies! Guests: (live) Chris O'Brien Met Chris in Memphis at last year's Folk Alliance and before that at NERFA. I had never heard his CD and asked him what was on the cover. He told me it was a yellow and black cover and damned if I didn't find it when I got back from Memphis. David Kleiner This is the Philadelphia area David Kleiner (as opposed to the New York based David Kleiner who did the song about the Mexican Rabbi). Last night this David Kleiner sang songs from his new album--a story telling, "Broadside" style collection of true events. He's a huge Phil Ochs fan and told me that he used to tune into my show when he was a youngster---and heard me interview Phil one Sunday night when Phil said "Here's a new song I'd like to do for you" Then David heard Phil unfolding a piece of paper by the microphone---he heard the wrinkling of the paper---and then Phil sang his "new" song "Changes". Wow! --I don't remember Phil doing that---reading it because it was so new.
8 PM Arlo is coming to town first week in November ---Keswick Theatre ---with Abe and The Burns Sisters. I hope to be there. I just found out that the late John Herald of the Greenbriar Boys wrote "Moneyland". Roy is coming to NERFA in November. Funny guy with clever songs, I look forward to meeting him. Greg Brown A longtime listener called me and said she thought Lui Collins wrote "Rooty Toot Toot For The Moon". I did play her recording of the song for a long while. But that's because I loved tht melody---and Greg Brown did not sing it that way. Unless I missed something. I know there was a verse added by Dick Pinney but Greg did write it---Right? Colleen Crosson Unbelievable ensemble virtuosity from these two guys. A knockout performance! Jonatha Brooke A Co-write with Woody Guthrie using a deck of cards as a metaphor for this love song. In a way I helped Jonatha get into the Woody Guthrie Archive when I suggested her to Nora Guthrie. I was producing a fund raiser for the Philadelphia Folksong Society and the idea was to have a number of "new" Woody Guthrie songs with music written by Contemporary folk artists. John Gorka, Cathy Fink and Jonatha--and Jonatha took it a few steps further. She asked Nora about looking for more Woody poetry she could work with---and wound up with a whole album of them. My mentor the late Dr. Kenny Goldstein produced this song for Prestige International years ago (The Best of Ewan MacColl). So now has anyone recorded "The Queen of Hearts" recently ?..Used to play that by Cynthia Gooding . And where is the Baez version of that card/love song? 9 PM Anne Hills Erik Balkey did a magnificent job writing or co-writing these songs and he got some of my favorite artists on board. Anne Hills song is poignant, loverly and oh so topical. Archie Fisher Robin & Linda Williams This time John Herald shows of his great voice and fast paced flat picking. Also you get to hear Ralph Rinzler and Bob Yellin trying to sound like hillbillies. Mark Erelli Concert feature: Chuck Brodsky sings a few songs- From his Double CD titled "Two Sets" Dory Previn Andre Previn's ex. I used to play this tune a lot when my show was on WMMR in the 70s. This past Saturday Carl, My partner in Sliced Bread Records celebrated his birthday by inviting Tony Trischka and Skyline (Danny Weiss, Barry Mitterhoff of Hot Tuna and bassist Larry Cohen) to play at his party. And fortunately Anne Hills, was at the part and sang Stranded In The Moonlight--a great song by Michael Smith. What a treat that was.
Darrell Scott Joel is also a great interpreter of Woody Guthrie. I spent some time with he and his daughter Jamaica at the Woodyfest in Okema OK in July. Joel's other daughter Cree manages Jackson Browne and a lovely lady to work with. Tony Rice At this point the Phillies were out front by 6 runs--- 11 PM (end of show) Production: These guys---my interns--- are all in their 20's and are really interested in music, recording, production. Every Sunday they show up to set up mics, run the board, answer phones and enter my playlist---in real time---into the XPN website. I don't know how I could operate the show without them. Bless 'em!
